MBCAAN INDIgenous youth council

MBCAAN in partnership with Four Directions Consulting and the Collaborative for Right Relations is offering an amazing opportunity to guide and shape a climate resilient action plan for indigenous youth who call the Monterey Bay their home. 

Quick facts

  • Who: Indigenous youth ages 14–18, including those reconnecting with Indigenous roots across the Americas.
     
  • Time: One-year commitment with seasonal meetings
     
  • Format: Virtual and in-person meetings.  1 meeting per month for a couple months with optional extras.  The youth groups and their leaders will determine how many meetings are needed moving forward.
     
  • Credit: Counts for service hours, senior projects, and college apps
     
  • Where: Monterey Bay region
     
  • Start: SEPTEMBER 2025
     
  • Status: APPLICATION STILL OPEN

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Meet other Indigenous youth.
     
  • Learn from local scientists, land stewards, and culture bearers.
     
  • Help shape a climate resiliency action plan for our region.
     
  • Choose a focus you care about and build something real with a group of your peers.
     
  • Present your ideas to a circle of regional partners.  Presentations can open doors to: internships, mentorship, job opportunities, and professional networks in climate justice.
     


WHEN AND WHERE

  • Gatherings: Virtual and/or In-person.  One meeting a month for the first two months and then leaders will decide how often to meet.
     
  • Extra sessions: Optional skill labs, speaker visits, and field days.
     
  • Locations: Across Monterey Bay with partner sites.
     
  • Tech needs for virtual: Phone, Tablet or laptop. Parent or adult support requested for travel.
     
  • Start: Fall 2025. You can still apply.

WHO CAN JOIN

  • Ages 14–18 in Monterey Bay region.
     
  • Youth who identify as Indigenous or are reconnecting with Indigenous roots across the Americas. Self-identification is honored. No documentation required.
     
  • We work with schools, tribal programs, and local groups to recruit and support youth all year.
     
  • All experience levels welcome. Curiosity is enough.


CREDIT, HOURS, LETTERS

  • Participation can count toward community service hours, senior projects, and college applications.
     
  • We provide attendance logs and verification letters.
     
  • This opportunity is unpaid right now. Our goal is to offer paid youth roles as possible funding grows.

PARENT INFO

  • Time: One-year commitment with a few key gatherings.


  • Workload: We know school comes first. Youth will have a project workload between gatherings that will be divided up between council members. We will make this as easy as possible and schedule around school.
     
  • Safety: Emergency contact, allergies, and accessibility needs collected. Media consent is optional.
     
  • Travel: We coordinate with families and partners to make it doable.
     
  • Communication: You will receive confirmation, schedules, and reminders by email or text.
     
  • Privacy: We only collect what we need for safety, scheduling, and reporting. We do not sell or share data.
     
  • Eligibility is based on self-identification as Indigenous, including family roots across the Americas.

HOW THIS FITS IN THE REGION

  • This youth council will take place virtually and within the Monterey.
     
  • Projects touch on flooding, fire, land, and water stewardship, and climate resiliency.
