Walking With Fire: Family Backpacking

Lake Eleanor Impact Dashboard

Walking With Fire is a program of Seventh Generation Rising that welcomes families and anyone who is curious about their Indigenous ancestry. Participants spend time on ancestral lands while learning cultural teachings and hands‑on land and fire stewardship.

This page shares verified impact from our May 2025 pilot backpacking trip to Lake Eleanor. It shows skills gained, barriers overcome, and participant voices that reflect how these experiences build connection to land, fire, water, and culture.

AT A GLANCE:   Reported by 4 adult respondents representing 8 participants (4 adults and 4 youth) who gained 6 new skills and overcame 6 key barriers, with 100% reporting cultural safety, connection to land, and willingness to recommend.

The impact of Walking With Fire is part of our wider work in Indigenous‑led stewardship. Explore our recent accomplishments or annual reports to see how these outcomes fit into long‑term care for land and culture.

WHAT PARTICIPANTS EXPERIENCED

  • 100% felt culturally safe.
  • 100% reported a strong connection to land, water, and ancestral teachings.
  • 100% would recommend this trip to other Indigenous families.
  • 100% gave permission to share their reflections.

Skills Learned on the Land

Participants gained:

  • Traditional teachings and ceremony
  • Teamwork and leadership
  • Wilderness skills
  • Recognizing plants and animals
  • Land stewardship
  • Growth and resilience

These skills were developed together during the trip. Most participants arrived without them and left carrying knowledge they can apply in their families and communities.

Barriers Overcome

Participants shared that this trip helped them move past:

  • Time and access limits
  • Financial strain
  • Physical and health challenges
  • Concerns about cultural safety
  • Feelings of disconnection

What Comes Next

Participant suggessions for future trips: When we asked participants what could make future backpacking experiences stronger, they shared thoughtful ideas:

  • Learn more about the native plants in the Sierras and how they were traditionally used.
  • Explore how the teachings can be applied in today’s context.
  • Spend more time in nature beyond the trip because, as one participant said, “we all need to chill the heck out and get into wilderness more.”

After debriefing as a team, SGR is taking this guidance into our planning. We are developing three tiered trip options for different skill levels and creating deeper pre‑trip teaching and learning sessions so that every family can arrive better prepared and leave with even more knowledge to carry forward.

Walking With Fire builds practical skills, strengthens ties between families and land, and grows the capacity to tend fire and earth with care. Each trip with Seventh Generation Rising adds to the shared effort that sustains this work over time.
